Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeasts that belong to the genus Candida. There are over 20 species of Candida yeast that can cause infection in humans, the most common of which is Candida albicans.

Candida yeasts normally reside in the intestinal tract and can be found on mucous membranes and skin without causing any infection. The overgrowth of these organisms can cause symptoms to develop.

Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area of the body that is infected. Candidiasis that develops in the mouth or throat is called " Thrush " or oropharyngeal candidiasis. Candidiasis in the vagina is commonly referred to as a yeast infection.

* White patches on the inner cheeks, tongue, roof of the mouth, and throat.

* Redness or soreness

* Cottony feeling in the mouth

* Cracking and redness at the corners of mouth

RISK FACTORS OF CANDIDIASIS

People who are at higher risk for getting candidiasis in the mouth and throat include babies, especially those younger than one month old

Other risk factors are:

* Cancer

* Smoke

* Taking antibiotics or corticosteroids, including inhaled corticosteroids for conditions like asthma

* Taking medications that cause dry mouth or have medical conditions that cause dry mouth

* Using contraceptives

INVASIVE CANDIDIASIS

Invasive candidiasis is an infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Unlike Candida infections in the mouth and throat (also called “thrush”) or vaginal “yeast infections,” invasive candidiasis is a serious infection that can affect the blood, heart, brain, eyes, bones, and other parts of the body. Candidemia, a bloodstream infection with Candida, is a common infection in hospitalized patients.
